Similar to locator ‘apps’ that help you find a nearby ATM or cup of coffee, More Than a Map(p) is a multi-layered geo-location app that locates sites and landmarks relevant to African American history in your immediate vicinity. It is a GPS based application that enables users to select from a variety of locations with historic value and interact with multimedia content about those places.

A Collaborative Map Build

We can’t do it alone! More Than A Map(p) is not only a smartphone application, but also a collaborative map-building project. Researchers in the field build our database of content, but you, the user, also build it. When you don’t see points in your area, add them. Once verified and approved, it will become part of More Than A Map(p), available for all users to see and interact. There are places where the app may be sparse today, but over time, with your help, we will build a portable, constantly updating, ever evolving, comprehensive interactive map of African American history.
